The Blockchain Promise and the Empty-Gallery Reality: Auditing the BCB's Digital Ticketing Project

At Gate 4 of the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, on the night of the BPL 2026 final, I counted ticket types as fans entered. Of the first 78 fans, only 11 showed phone-based 'blockchain' QR codes; 67 held paper tickets. The stadium was 45 percent full, yet the BCB had declared that 90 percent of tickets were sold on blockchain. That gap became the starting point of a three-month investigation. In October 2026, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced a blockchain-based NFT ticketing project with the Dhaka software firm Digital Cricket Solutions (DCS), with a budget of BDT 35 million. BCB officials promised a new era of transparency. But my site visit found the registered DCS office empty. A Right to Information request returned answers to only 2 of 9 numbered questions, rejecting 7 on 'security' grounds. The blockchain's core promise is an immutable public record; a security excuse contradicts its very philosophy. Two independent findings anchor the investigation. First, mining data from the smart contract found in the BPL website's source code shows only 8,400 NFT tickets were minted in three months—roughly 2.6 percent of the estimated 320,000 spectators, against the official claim of 90 percent. Second, the official ticketing website tickets.bpl.com.bd is hosted on a server in Thailand, directly violating the contract clause that data must not be stored outside Bangladesh. The contract, a leaked three-page copy, allocates BDT 11 million to software, 14 million to hardware and 10 million to operations, yet contains no smart contract address or wallet identifier. Site verification across Chattogram, Sylhet and Rajshahi found similar patterns: gate staff had paper lists instead of scanners, self-described 'digital ticket' buyers could not link their receipts to any public ledger, and a Rajshahi 'next-gen ticketing' billboard QR code opened a Facebook page. The cost per on-chain scan in this project works out to roughly BDT 4,167, while only 7 percent of surveyed fans even carried a phone ticket. In contrast, the Indian Premier League's blockchain ticketing publishes scan events on a public ledger; BPL's system does not. Critics dismiss blockchain ticketing as useless luxury. The real failure is not the technology but the absence of accountability: a BDT 35 million transparency project whose public record was never made public. The BCB should publish the smart contract address, wallet addresses and every gate scan event. Until the promise matches the spreadsheet, the biggest gap in the BPL remains between the official slogan and the empty gallery.
